How to read the answer

A DNS blocklist (DNSBL) is a list of addresses its owner has seen sending spam, or that should not send mail directly. Mail servers ask these lists about every server that delivers to them, and many refuse or mark mail from a listed address.

Many lists refuse questions that reach them through big public resolvers, which is how every question from this site travels. Before asking about your address, we ask each list about its own test entry, which every list must list. A list that does not answer it is shown as "did not answer our query", never as "not listed". Look your address up on that list's own page.

If you are listed: find out why on the list's own page, fix the cause (often a hacked account or a form that sends mail for anybody), then ask for removal. Most lists also drop an address by themselves once the spam stops.

Questions about this tool

My address is listed. What do I do?

Open the list's own page, which says why it was listed and how to be removed. Fix the cause first: a hacked mailbox or website, a contact form that sends mail to any address, or a computer with malware. Lists remove an address quickly once the spam has stopped, and list it again if it has not.

Why does Spamhaus say it did not answer?

Spamhaus does not answer questions that come through large public resolvers, and the questions from this site go through one. Look your address up at check.spamhaus.org instead. We would rather say we could not check than tell you an address is clean when the list never told us.

Does "not listed" mean my mail will be delivered?

No. It means none of the lists that answered has an entry for the address. Gmail, Microsoft and other large providers keep their own reputation, which no public list shows, and they also look at SPF, DKIM, DMARC and what you send.

Can I check an IPv6 address?

Yes, but most lists only take IPv4 addresses, and those are shown as not taking IPv6. Type the address itself: when you type a name, only its IPv4 addresses are checked.
